Perhaps This Is an Unpopular Opinion, But Detailed Planning Is Overrated
Ok, I know you Type A people pleasers are shaking your head at me. But hear me out, please.
We’ve been taught to worship at the altar of being organized. Having all our ducks in a row. Knowing all the pros and cons. It’s the “Ready, Aim, Fire” approach—as if every move we make has to be perfectly choreographed before we take a single step.
But life (and business) don’t really work that way. Often, we need to just get started. Move out of our own way, ditch outdated mindsets, and simply try something. Why? Because many people never get past the “aim” part. They’re stuck staring down the barrel of their own fear, waiting for some mythical moment when they “know enough,” “are ready enough,” or “have it all figured out.”
Spoiler alert: that moment may never come.
Honestly, the “plan thoroughly” crowd is outdated. It’s an old-fashioned, patriarchal approach to business that truly doesn’t work for most people (especially women or neurodivergent folks). Isn’t it time to stop playing by the rules that don’t serve you and start writing your own rules?
The truth is, planning can become a crutch. It can keep you in a loop of overthinking, waiting for permission to just freaking start. What if, instead, you flipped the script to Ready, Fire, Aim?
Do the thing. Launch the project. Send the pitch.
You’ll learn 100 times more by doing and adjusting than you ever will by waiting and analyzing. The magic happens when you see what actually works, not when you theorize about what might work. It’s not reckless—it’s responsive. You fire, assess where you hit, and adjust your aim for the next shot.
The bravest leaders and entrepreneurs don’t wait until they feel bulletproof. They trust themselves enough to take imperfect action, learn, and iterate.
So, what are you still “aiming” at? Maybe it’s time to pull the trigger and figure it out along the way. Meanwhile, check out this video below!
