Rhythm > Routine: The Art of Flowing with Life

It’s time we talk about energy lately. It’s funky as hell. If you’ve been feeling off, tired, foggy, weirdly emotional, or like your brain packed up and left the building… you’re not alone. Last week I couldn’t focus for shit. I was more exhausted than I’ve been in months. And the wildest part? I couldn’t even read. Read! If you know me, you know how bonkers that is. Reading is my solace, my happy place, my go-to. But my brain just said, “Nah, not today.”

So instead, I listened to myself. Really listened. Not the mental chatter of what I should be doing, but the quieter, deeper guidance — my body, my intuition, my inner wisdom. I didn’t override it with guilt or push through like some productivity robot. I leaned in. I rested. I slept a lot. I binged a truly embarrassing number of Netflix original rom-coms (and okay, a few of them were surprisingly charming).

I could’ve shamed myself. Beat myself up with some toxic productivity bullshit. But I didn’t. I chose to honor the rhythm I was in. I gave myself compassion. And damn, did that feel revolutionary once I got over feeling like I was letting the world down by taking care of myself (yes, even I struggle with the societal expectations of productivity. That’s why I do this work! Becasue we all need it, all the time).

It got me thinking: routines are fine… until they’re not.

Routines can be like that friend who shows up on time, sticks to the itinerary, and panics if plans change. Bless ‘em — we need them sometimes. But too much routine can feel like a cage. Predictable. Confining. And frankly, boring as hell.

So what if we ditched routine in favor of rhythm?

Rhythm is routine’s cooler, looser, more intuitive cousin. It doesn’t need a spreadsheet or a color-coded planner to feel good (not that I’m knocking these things – if you love them and they bring you joy then, by all means, do them!). Rhythm doesn’t box you in — it invites you to feel your way through the day. To respond to your energy. Your needs. Your joy.

Rhythm is the difference between balance and harmony. Balance says everything should weigh the same. Harmony says everything should work together. Rhythm lets you sleep in one day, and take a sunrise walk the next. It lets you meditate for twenty minutes or blast your “DanceAsstitude” playlist (yep, more on that in this week’s Live with Heather Vickery). It says you get to shift, evolve, and make the rules up as you go — and you’re still showing up powerfully.

Because rhythm is structure with soul.

When you live in rhythm, your days flow with you, not against you. You move when your body says move. You rest when your spirit needs space. You create in the moments you’re most alive. And spoiler alert: that’s where the magic happens. That’s where life starts to feel good again.

Want a rhythm reset? Cool. But be prepared to let go of a few things:

  • Rigid Timetables: Your calendar doesn’t get to run your life. You do.
  • Fear of Change: Rhythm requires change. It’s part of the groove.
  • Perfectionism: Let. That. Shit. Go. Rhythm embraces imperfection — and honestly, that’s where your humanity shines.
  • Comparison: Your rhythm is yours. Stop measuring it against someone else’s.
  • Overthinking: Feel your way through instead of trying to logic your way out.
  • Resistance to Flow: You’re not failing just because things don’t go according to plan.
  • Negative Self-Talk: Being in rhythm isn’t lazy — it’s strategic, intuitive, and powerful.
  • Attachments to Outcomes: Rhythm is about the process, not just the result.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: Not every day needs to be epic. Some days just are, and that’s beautiful.
  • Old Patterns: What worked before might not serve you now. Let it evolve.
  • Micromanaging: Trust yourself enough to loosen the grip. You’re safe without controlling everything.

So yeah — routines are fine. But rhythms? Rhythms are freedom.

Join me on this week’s Brave in Action live show, where we’ll talk all about this shift. We’ll get real about what it looks like, how to start listening to your own rhythm, and how to build a life that flows with you, not against you.

Because life’s most memorable moments? They never stick to the damn script.
