For years, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin sat on my shelf collecting dust—even though everyone raved about it. Maybe I was saving it for the exact right moment (divine timing, anyone?), because when I finally cracked it open, I couldn’t put it down. It’s not just a novel—it’s a meditation on creativity, identity, and the relentless reinvention that life demands.
One passage, in particular, struck me deeply:
“What was the gate, anyway? A doorway, she thought. A portal. The possibility of a different world. The possibility that you might walk through the door and reinvent yourself as something better than you had before.”
As someone with an open Head Center in Human Design, inspiration finds me in wild and wonderful places: books, art, unexpected conversations, those random sparks of “holy shit, this means something.” This quote stopped me because it captured what I teach and live every damn day:
Look for the gates.
So… What is a Gate (and no, I’m not talking about the Human Design gates)
Yes, it can be a physical structure, a grand transformation, or a dramatic life pivot. But, sometimes, it’s subtle. Quiet. Unassuming.
A gate can be:
- A gut decision to walk away from something that no longer fits.
- A jolt of joy that makes you see your entire life differently.
- A brave-ass moment that shifts your internal compass.
- A tiny whisper saying, “this way,” even if the road’s unmarked.
The real magic? It’s in noticing. In recognizing when you’re not who you were five minutes ago. That’s the portal—that’s the gate.
Joy, Hope, Bravery, and Self-Compassion Are Gates
I know the world feels like a goddamn dumpster fire some days. And when everything feels out of control, the bravest thing you can do is choose to feel good anyway. Prioritize your peace and wellbeing.
Joy isn’t naïve. Hope isn’t frivolous. Bravery and self-compassion aren’t luxuries.
They’re how you reclaim your power.
They’re how you lead.
They’re how you change your world—and ours.
This is what I help my clients remember. Because we don’t become conscious leaders by grinding harder. We become them by choosing to walk through these inner gates—on purpose.
How to Start Spotting Your Own Gates
- Tune in to what lingers. A conversation. A quote. A song. If it leaves a mark, pay attention.
- Let the transformation be weird. Becoming a new version of yourself can feel awkward as hell. That’s normal. Stay in it.
- Choose tiny bravery daily. It adds up. Choosing joy when it’s easier to stay numb? That’s a fucking revolution.
Zevin’s book is about becoming—not just once, but over and over. That’s what gates offer: not perfection, but possibility.
So… have you walked through a gate lately?
What did it open up for you?
And when the next one shows up, will you recognize it?
